as-salāmu 'alaykum wa raHmatullāhi wa barakātuhu

Blind children are time and again the most neglected class within our communities. They are often looked down upon and regarded as a burden to their parents and society at large. They depend largely on the charity of others and often in India survive through begging.

In view of this, in the year 2009, it was decided to open a school within the al-Madina Welfare & Education Society, in Memari, West Bengal, India for the blind and partially blind students, where they can receive Islamic education based on the Qur'ān and Sunnah. The principle objective being that instead of showing pity to the blind, we give them dignity and honour in helping them become productive members of society which will enable them to earn a living and not rely on others.

We currently have 17 children studying at the centre and hope to add many more children. We are in need of:

- More resources for the blinds in the form of books

- Better facilities and teachers to educate them

Please help us make a real difference in these childrens' lives and give them a truly brighter future. Your charity will hopefully go a long way and we hope that Allāh returns it to you a thousand fold in this life and the next.

AlFitrah Foundation donated some Quraanic braille primers , Surah Yasin , Juz Amma and 2 books on the 99 names of Allah for the Zohra school for the blind in West Bengal. Syed Aboul Quasem a retired engineer living in London, started the school for blind orphans and poor children in order to give them a brighter future Inshaa Allah .

This is the 4th year we are working with Dar al Quran al Kareem wal Sunnah in Gaza to hold a summer camp for blind children to memorise the Quran during their summer holidays.

The reason this camp has grown multifold since it first started with 15 children in 2012, is because the blind children really enjoy coming to camp and learning the Quran with their friends.

Firdaus works with us at AlFitrah Foundation and is a hafiz Quran, he proof reads our braille Qurans as well as edits Islamic texts and operates our embosser machines . He has many ideas for our future Islamic publications based on his experience as a blind Muslim .
Hidayah is partially sighted and works at Persatuan Braille Malaysia.

Moulana Waqar Younus, is a graduate of Madrassa An-Noor for the Blind and presently teaching at Baitul Ilm, in Karachi Pakistan.

The Baitul Ilm Trust has a wonderful structured syllabus of Deeniyat subjects which include basic Fiqh, Morals, History, Hadith and the recitation of the Holy Qur’an.

He is also in charge of transcribing these books into Braille so the Blind have equal access to these books as there sighted counterparts.

It takes Moulana Waqar almost two hours every day to travel by public transport form Gulshan e Memar to Guru Mandir in Karachi's teeming chaotic morning traffic.

We have now provided for him a driver with a motor cycle to travel to work and to conduct classes for the Blind that are held in Korangai, Mansehra and the Sohrab Goth slum suburbs of Karachi.

Presently Moulana Waqar is in Peshawar training the teachers that attended the previous Qur’anic Braille workshop

Madrassa An-Noor for the Blind was invited by Brother Mubashir Jan of Peshawar to conduct a Qur’an Braille Workshop for the Ulema and the Blind of Peshawar. He had visited Madrassa An-Noor for the Blind during his time out in South Africa with the Ladies (Masturaat) Jamaat. Upon his request, we prepared material for twenty five students. As Braille books are heavy, these weight considerations are necessary when transporting books overseas.

South Africa is a member of the International Union of Braille Qur’an Services. This body was formed last year in Istanbul, Turkey to promote Braille Qur’an Literacy and to form a unified Arabic Qur’an Braille Code internationally. Fifteen countries including South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Turkey, Jordan, Egypt, Palestine, United Kingdom, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, Pakistan, and Iran are members. Our chairman, brother Selahattin Ayidin of Beyazay Foundation, Istanbul had established contact with the blind Muslims of Albania. They had requested our help to read the Holy Qur’an in Braille.

A Qur'an Braille workshop was jointly organised by the Muslim Association of Visually Impaired of Nigeria [MAVIN] and Busari Bello Olaniyan Foundation [BBOF] and facilitated by Madrassa An-Noor for the blind, South-Africa between 17th and 20th JumadalThani, 1435AH (17th and 20thApril, 2014) at Nasrullah College, Isheri-Olofin, Lagos, Nigeria.

A vest that uses vibration and voice commands to allow the blind and seriously visually impaired to walk unaided has been developed by Palestinian students from the Polytechnic University in Hebron.

Their Smart Assist System for Blind People is designed to be used in place of the traditional white cane used by the sightless.

Alhamdulillah, Alfitrah Foundation has given 5 braille Qurans to Nottingham Islam to be placed at their dakwah centre. Their dakwah centre has an amazing collection of Qurans with translations in many languages, including Polish, Greek and Japanese,.
